He pounded the same streets as Fifties Blackpool legends Stan Matthew and Mortnersen. Even the Golden Mile never did lead to England's glory, midfielder Mark Bonner did rattle up 428 matches in a professional career that saw him leave Bloomfield Road for Cardiff City and Oldham Athletic.
Raised in Ormskirck, dependable Bonner's playing adventure was cruelly ended by a succession of niggling injuries at just 31. There might be a few grey whisps in his raven hair these days, but the Lancastrian0 has certainly evolved since that final match at Port Vale in September 2005.
Bonner has returned to his native north west and is currently running a highly successful furniture supply company with the same determination that laced his on-the-pitch displays - tenacity was always part of this former linkman's profile.
His old Cowbridge neighbour and business mentor Steve Day sees Bonner as GSD's eyes in an area that has gifted football the glittering talents of Stephen Gerrard, Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes - the like of Francis Lee. Colin Bell and '66 England World Cup hero Alan Bail emerging from the same area as past eras.
Bonner, who has a talent in coaching, was always able to thread a pass through a congested midfield and he'll now spot the golden soccer nuggets in an area that has always proved bountiful for the Beautiful Game.
"Injuries ended my days as a player, of course. But I want to give a kid the same opportunity that I had." said Bonner, "The Greater Manchester and Liverpool area is football mad. I see so much enthusiasm for football around Wigan, Blackpool and Preston too - I'm really looking forward to this new challenge that GSD has presented to me.
"The company are doing things the correct way in the that they are committed to spotting a boy early. GSD's nurturing commences then - a youngster will always get the best possible advice with regard to a lifestyle and education befitting a professional athlete.
We will offer simplistic but effective guidance for an individual throughout the years, just as Steve guided me throughout a large part of my time in football and then into the business world.
